Maia Epps, a senior guard for the Homestead High School basketball team, was involved in a serious car accident on her way to school on Friday, as reported by various news sources. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with her medical expenses.
Epps, who stands 5-foot-10, is committed to play for Louisville and underwent back surgery just a few days after the accident, according to her family.
The school has been providing updates on her condition since the accident, and Coach Rod Parker, with the family’s approval, has addressed some misinformation circulating online regarding Epps’ status.
Homestead Athletics issued a statement confirming that Epps is in stable condition, noting that some of the information shared previously was incorrect. The GoFundMe notes that her recovery is expected to be lengthy.
“She was first taken to a local Fort Wayne hospital and later airlifted to one in Indianapolis,” the page mentions. “By the grace of God, she is still with us!”
There has been an outpouring of support, including a $5,000 donation from Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs.
Epps is recognized as one of the top prospects in Indiana for 2026. Louisville’s women’s basketball coach, Jeff Walz, mentioned that he spoke with Epps and her family and is hopeful for her full recovery.
Last season, Epps averaged 15 points per game, contributing significantly to Homestead’s impressive 24-3 record and their recent sectional championship win.
Reflecting on her commitment to Louisville, Epps previously stated, “This has been my dream for as long as I can remember.” She expressed how the support from the team felt like family right from the start of the recruiting process.
