David Chokachi’s Journey to Peak Fitness
David Chokachi, at 58, is feeling better than ever, and his return to the “Baywatch” set has played a part in that. Nearly three decades since first portraying lifeguard Cody Madison, he’s made a noticeable commitment to his health and fitness.
After an intense recovery process from Achilles tendon ruptures, Chokachi described discovering a “higher operating system” within himself. He has aimed to optimize his brain chemistry, which he believes has positively impacted both his mental and physical well-being.
“I’m waking up at 3:30 every morning, and yes, it might sound a bit crazy, but it feels right for me,” he shared. It’s during these early hours that he finds his groove, influenced by neuroscientist Andrew Huberman and former Navy SEAL DJ Shipley.
Chokachi mentioned Shipley’s method of achieving “micro wins,” which are small daily accomplishments that boost confidence and productivity. “Just getting up early can set a positive tone for the day,” he noted. “It’s empowering. You feel like, ‘I am a badass,’ and that mindset really helps.”
To prepare for his latest role, he doubled down on his fitness regimen. “When I was on the original ‘Baywatch,’ being fit meant more opportunities. So this time, I wanted to make an impression,” he recalled. Over six months, he trained twice daily, emphasizing the importance of being in top shape.
On set, when it came time to film a scene requiring him to take off his shirt, he remembers being met with disbelief from the crew. “They were shocked at how fit I looked, asking how old I was,” he laughed.
Chokachi starts his day with an ice plunge and a sauna session, claiming this routine helps with brown fat, which is beneficial for burning calories. “It’s a positive stressor for my brain,” he explained, saying that by the time he’s done, he feels ready to take on the world.
Despite once thinking he peaked physically during his younger days, he feels he has surpassed that now. “I’m leaner and healthier, living a more focused lifestyle devoid of parties and excess,” he mentioned. However, he admits he’s not overly strict about his diet; it’s more about maintaining a consistent routine.
His upcoming challenge includes running a 5k with a 45-pound backpack, a task he plans to undertake at the annual Malibu Moves race. “It’s not just about fitness but also about being involved in the community,” he reflected, expressing his gratitude for the strong sense of community in Malibu. “It’s incredible how people look out for one another here.”
Whether it’s through volunteering to help animals in need or contributing to local safety efforts, Chokachi cherishes his ability to give back. “I want to maximize my time and leave the world a better place for my daughter and those around me,” he concluded. It’s this blend of dedication, service, and a love for fitness that marks his journey now.
