Blood Drive Competition Between NYPD and FDNY
A new rivalry is brewing between the FDNY and NYPD, but this time, it’s for a noble cause. As both teams join forces, the primary focus is on boosting the blood supplies for the New York Blood Bank.
“What’s at stake isn’t trophies; it’s about saving lives,” said NYPD Department Director John Chell on Tuesday at the Brooklyn Fire Station headquarters. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that blood is readily available when needed.
The competition launched with a month-long blood drive, featuring participants from both departments. Donors had the chance to win gift cards worth $500 as part of the event.
For years, the two organizations have vied for public affection through various activities, including traditional boxing matches and the annual Heroes Hockey game.
While the competitive spirit is very much alive, there’s a shared understanding of the significant impact this endeavor has. “FDNY obviously has the upper hand,” remarked FDNY committee member Robert Tucker. “We frequently compete in sports, but this is another way we can contribute to public safety.”
Tucker continued, acknowledging the essential work both teams do daily to save lives. This blood drive kicks off on Monday and will continue until July 20th, with gift card raffles for those who participate.
Chell reiterated the friendly competition aspect but couldn’t resist expressing confidence in the NYPD’s chances. “Personally, I believe we’re going to win this one,” he stated.
