By continuing to move forward Fantasy Baseball To win a championship and prepare for the league’s competitive trade deadline, it’s going to take some finesse in preparing the pitching staff.
Not only do they need to have a strong pitching staff, but they also need to be ready to take the mound five days in a row until the end of the year.
Veterans like Zack Wheeler and Dylan Cease are always great options as they will be expected to hit the 180 inning mark, but what happens if the pitching staff is buoyed by elite performances that don’t last into September?
How do you deal with pitchers like Paul Skenes and Garrett Crochet?
Inning limits often get complicated for young starting pitchers.
Conventional wisdom tends to favor a phenomenon commonly referred to as the “Verducci effect,” in which teams don’t allow starting pitchers to pitch more than 30 innings more than they did the previous season, due to fear of injury or a significant decline the following season.
While some have backed away from this stance, the health of young pitchers remains a top priority.
And for teams competing for playoff spots, the constant battle is whether to keep young pitchers pitching or rest them for the future.
The decision for the White Sox and Crochet seems easy.
Crochet will become a free agent after this season and the team is exploring ways to retain him.
As the MLB trade deadline approached, the team limited him to fewer than four innings per game and continued to do the same after the deadline.
With no playoff prospects and wanting to re-sign Crochet, we can expect more of the same going forward, which means he won’t help you anymore in fantasy this season.
They could trade him in redraft leagues, but they may end up having to waive him.
In keeper leagues, you should trade him if you are confident that a trade will lead to a win this season.
With Skenes it’s a slightly different story.
The Pirates are still in contention for the championship, but their chances of winning are slim.
Chances are, they’ll be out of there by the end of August.
Everything you need to know about MLB betting
Skenes has been dominant, but he has already thrown 60 more innings than he did last year and is expected to throw a shutout if the Pirates are eliminated.
If you’re in a redraft league, you might consider trading him for a player you believe will continue to be a pitcher.
In a keeper format, you should bench him and save him for next season unless someone offers you big money to ensure a win.
Pitching well during this time can be difficult.
The veteran key players should be able to support the rotation until the end.
Promotions in September should help bolster the squad, but some of the top young pitchers like Skenes, Crochet and even Cole Ragans may not make it to this point in the year.
