BYU Stuns No. 2 Notre Dame in Thrilling Upset
BYU achieved a significant milestone Saturday night by defeating No. 2 Notre Dame, with quarterback Bear Bachmeier feeling particularly motivated leading into the game.
“Coming out of high school, Notre Dame really disrespected me and my family, and I was determined not to lose to them,” the sophomore remarked to reporters after the Cougars’ narrow 28-24 victory over the Fighting Irish. “There was just no way I was going to lose to them tonight.”
Bachmeier held true to his word, as the eighth-ranked Cougars shocked the Fighting Irish. He passed for 224 yards, recorded one touchdown along with an interception, and also rushed for 45 yards and two touchdowns. His pivotal six-yard touchdown pass to Walker Lyons clinched the win for BYU, who also ended Notre Dame’s 16-game winning streak.
The matchup was already charged with intensity, partly due to the history between the quarterbacks. Bachmeier had received a scholarship offer from Notre Dame, but it was reportedly withdrawn once the Irish secured a commitment from Deuce Knight. Interestingly, Knight later opted to leave Notre Dame for Auburn and has since transferred to Ole Miss.
In the loss, Notre Dame starting QB CJ Carr completed 27 of 49 passes for 261 yards.
Bachmeier started his college career at Stanford but transferred to BYU ahead of the 2025 season. The dismissal of Stanford coach Troy Taylor opened the door for him and his brother Tiger to make a change in the spring.
“When I reflect on Bear, his high school film really showcased his abilities. He has a powerful arm and is a talented quarterback with strengths both in running and passing,” said Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman.
He also noted that Bachmeier hails from a solid family background.
With this victory over Notre Dame, Bachmeier has silenced critics, and BYU now holds the No. 2 ranking in the AP poll.
