A runner in Anchorage recently avoided a bear attack but ended up hospitalized due to the incident. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reported that the woman was out on her own, running along the Wolverine Bowl Trail in Prospect Heights when she encountered the bear. Fortunately, she managed to use bear spray to escape from the situation.
After the attack, she was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. In related news, it’s important to note that two hikers were injured in a separate bear attack in Yellowstone National Park.
Biologists investigated the scene of the Alaska incident and collected samples, although they did not find the bear involved. The department has advised everyone who sees a bear, or any wild animal behaving unusually, to report it. They’ve also put up warning signs at the Prospect Heights trailhead, urging hikers to avoid the now-closed trail.
The police explained that, during summer, thick leaves can obstruct visibility, making it easier to have unexpected encounters with wildlife. They recommended choosing hiking routes that have better visibility and avoiding areas near streams known to attract salmon.
When in bear territory, it’s wise to carry deterrents like bear spray, stick together in groups, make noise to avoid startling bears, and keep pets leashed. In case you do encounter a bear, the department advises remaining calm, standing your ground, and not running away. If the bear is stationary, observe it while slowly moving away. But, if it approaches, stand tall, avoid appearing threatening, and use deterrents when the bear is close enough.
This recent bear encounter follows another attack in Anchorage less than a month ago, where a different woman was attacked while walking with a friend and several dogs near a residential area. This previous incident occurred on an unofficial trail where visibility was poor due to dense vegetation, which likely contributed to the encounter.
In that case, the police noted that the bear briefly made contact with one of the hikers before departing, and though the injuries were not life-threatening, they were still significant enough to need medical attention.
