Giants Stumble in Loss to Saints

The Giants faced a challenging defeat against the Saints, ultimately losing by a score of 26-14 after experiencing an overwhelming series of turnovers. They started strong, holding a 14-3 lead, but allowed four consecutive turnovers that turned the tide of the game.

With just over five minutes remaining, rookie quarterback Jackson Dart attempted a pass to Beau Collins, an undrafted free agent wide receiver. Unfortunately, Collins was unable to make the catch, leading to Dart’s second interception and marking the team’s fifth turnover in a row.

“First and foremost, that was a play that obviously couldn’t happen,” Collins reflected later. In the heat of the moment, he hesitated slightly, unsure whether to push through or pull back, but ultimately felt he needed to keep moving and protect on the play.

This misstep was, perhaps, indicative of his inexperience; Collins recognized he had let his teammate down. “I feel terrible, especially given how the game was going. I didn’t do anything to help improve our situation,” he admitted. “There’s really no excuse.”

Having begun his college career at Clemson and finishing at Notre Dame, Collins knows he will have another chance to contribute.

The Giants could really use him right now, especially since Malik Nabors is out for the rest of the season due to an ACL injury, and Darius Slayton has been ruled out for Thursday’s game against the Eagles.

Options for receivers include Wan’Dale Robinson, Collins, Jalin Hiatt, and Lil’ Jordan Humphrey, who is expected to be moved up from the practice squad. There’s even talk of using kick returner Gunner Olszewski on offense.

“My coaches keep expressing their belief in my abilities,” Collins stated with a bit of determination. “I trust them, I believe in myself, and I’m committed to giving it my all.”

On the defensive side, rookie outside linebacker Abdul Carter made eight quarterback hits, tying with Kayvon Thibodeau and just one behind the team leader, Brian Barnes. However, Carter noted he still needs to improve, stating, “When I review my film, I focus on my mistakes—what I did wrong, whether it relates to technique or decision-making. Sure, I see the positives too, but I think learning from the negatives is more beneficial.” There’s an acknowledgment that growth comes from those challenging moments.

The Giants have high hopes for Carter’s development this season. Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence believes Carter’s proximity to the quarterback—sometimes that’s half the battle. “You might not always get the sacks, but impacting the game is key, and I think he gets that,” Lawrence shared. “He understands what it takes every game.”

As the Giants prepare for their next challenge, two Eagles defensive starters, DT Jalen Carter and LB Nakobe Dean, are currently listed as questionable due to injuries, adding a bit of uncertainty to the matchup ahead.
