WNBA Coach Stands Firm on Brunson Comments

Becky Hammon, a coach in the WNBA, continues to hold her ground regarding her opinions on NBA player Jalen Brunson. In a discussion back in 2023, she stated that Brunson isn’t a “1A guy” and emphasized during an ESPN segment that having a shorter player as your top player isn’t typically successful. She reiterated her stance in May, questioning why there seemed to be such strong reactions to her views.

Despite Brunson earning the Finals MVP title and leading the Knicks to a championship, Hammon maintained her position without any apologies during a recent interview.

Hammon remarked, “Jalen, all he did was prove history wrong. He proved he was an anomaly,” expressing admiration for Brunson’s performance alongside legends like Stephen Curry and Isaiah Thomas. “He really showed he could be that 1A guy,” she added. But she also made it clear: “I’m never going to apologize for having an opinion. ESPN is paying me for it.”

The 6-foot-2 Brunson solidified his status in Knicks history by scoring 45 points in a championship-clinching victory against the Spurs. He later addressed some criticisms in a speech at City Hall, where he seemed to allude to Hammon’s earlier comments.

Brunson commented, “There are a lot of people who say a lot of negative things. If those opinions are proven wrong, you don’t have to criticize them.” Even if he didn’t mention Hammon directly, her remarks have enraged many fans of the Knicks. In a light-hearted jab, she suggested that referring to Brunson as the best Knick of all time might stir up even more emotions among fans.

“I’ve always appreciated Jalen,” she said, recounting her admiration from his college days at Villanova and with the Mavericks. “I don’t get why my comments were seen as so outrageous since they were based on historical and analytical perspectives.” Moreover, she even voiced her openness to being proven wrong about her views.

Brunson, having just completed his fourth season, has already made a significant impact on the franchise. He has averaged 26 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds over those seasons and has been selected as an All-Star three times. Last season, he was honored as the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year.

During the playoffs, his performance soared, averaging 29.4 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game, which played a vital role in the Knicks ending a 53-year playoff drought.
