Belgium shot-putter Jolien Boumkwo runs hurdles in pinch after team suffers injuries

Jorian Bunkwo may be one of Belgium’s best shot put and hammer throwers, but on Saturday she became the ultimate team player.

Beomkoo competed in the 100m hurdles to save his team from disqualification at the European Athletics Team Championships. Photos and videos of him showed Bumkoo smiling as he tackled each hurdle. She finished the race with a time of 32.81 seconds without crossing any hurdles.

Spain’s Teresa Erlandnea took first place with a time of 13.22 seconds.

“Sometimes I do hurdles in training, so I know how to do it,” Beomkwo told The Guardian after the race. “Beyond the shot put, I felt like everyone was watching me, so I thought it was a special experience.”

“I try not to take myself too seriously as an athlete. The past has taught me that it’s just a body spasm. If my two points ensure I stay in the top division, It will definitely be worth it.”

Bumkwo was sent to the hurdles after two Belgian sprinters were injured, according to Reuters. Belgium would have been disqualified if she had not taken part in the race. In the end, Belgium finished 14th out of 16 nations and was relegated from Division I.

Bumkuo, 29, has been on the international stage for Belgium since competing at the European Junior Championships in 2011, where he finished 13th. She finished 15th at the 2023 European Indoor Championships in Turkey.

She holds the Japanese record for outdoor and indoor shot put. Her outdoor distance was 17.09 and her indoor distance was 17.87.
