Tim Curry Passes Away at 80
Tim Curry, the legendary movie star, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 80, as confirmed by his long-time publicist.
Curry is perhaps best remembered for his iconic portrayal in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which debuted in 1975. His larger-than-life performance became a defining moment in film history.
“I enjoy exploring the more curious aspects of the human mind and behavior,” he once stated. This perspective certainly shines through in his roles.
He also gained significant recognition for his comedic role as the butler in the 1985 film adaptation of the board game “Clue,” along with his chilling portrayal of the evil clown in the original TV version of Stephen King’s “It.”
Curry was born Timothy James Curry on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, a small village in Cheshire, England.
After earning a dual degree in English and drama from the University of Birmingham, he encountered Richard O’Brien during a tour of the musical “Hair.” This meeting was pivotal in his career.
Curry took center stage in O’Brien’s “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which cleverly parodied horror and sci-fi films. The play later transitioned to film after being presented in Los Angeles.
The film initially struggled at the box office but eventually earned a dedicated following, turning into a cult classic. Fans created an audience participation guide, and it has become a Halloween staple with screenings often held at midnight.
“’Rocky Horror’ is less about being a traditional movie and more about performance art,” noted a writer from the Los Angeles Times.
Throughout his career, Curry released rock music albums and starred in a wide array of television shows and films. He received nominations for the Laurence Olivier Award twice and was nominated for a Tony Award three times on Broadway. In 1991, he won a daytime Emmy Award for his work in the animated series “Peter Pan & the Pirates.”
After suffering a life-altering stroke in 2012 that left him in a wheelchair, Curry reduced his public engagements but remained active as a voice actor until his passing.
Despite his illustrious career, Curry never married and had no children. His unique ability to delve into the complexities of characters made him a beloved figure in entertainment.
