Violet Affleck Advocates for Mask Mandates at the UN
Violet Affleck, the daughter of actors Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, addressed the United Nations recently, highlighting the significance of mask mandates in mitigating the effects of Covid-19. This comes more than five years after the pandemic initially forced global lockdowns.
At 19, Affleck emphasized the relevance of mask usage in an “ongoing pandemic.” She wore a KN95 mask during her speech, even though it has been years since the pandemic began to wane.
“We are frequently told by our leaders that we are the future,” she stated. “Yet, in light of the ongoing pandemic, our present situation is being overshadowed.”
She raised concerns that those in power are “ignoring, disregarding, and concealing” the realities of airborne transmission and the long-lasting impacts of the virus.
Continuing her points, Affleck noted that “young people lack true choices and information regarding what is decided on their behalf,” adding that “one infection could potentially harm nearly every cell in the body, from the brain to the heart.”
Affleck expressed apprehension about children contracting and passing on the virus at school, saying such realities would be both “debilitating” and “exhausting.”
“I feel anger on their behalf. It’s truly neglectful to look at children and state, ‘We had the means to protect you, yet we chose not to,'” she remarked.
Despite her arguments, numerous credible research outlets have indicated that masks may not significantly reduce the spread of Covid-19. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health mentioned that there isn’t substantial evidence to suggest that masks protect the public from respiratory infections, including Covid-19.
Nonetheless, Affleck persisted, wearing her KN95 mask and asserting, “We possess the technology available to prevent airborne illnesses, yet it seems we refuse to acknowledge it.”
“I feel anxious when thinking about potential infections and reinfections over the next five years,” she mentioned, adding a hope that “filtered air will be viewed as essential as clean water.”
“We can establish a clean air infrastructure that is pervasive and necessary, so future generations won’t even question its importance,” she concluded.
A Yale student and the eldest child of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, Affleck has previously advocated for “mask mandates in county health facilities” and made calls for increased accessibility to Covid-19 testing and masks during a Los Angeles County Supervisors meeting.
A tweet shared during her UN speech captured her sentiments: “It’s absurd to see the kids and say, ‘We knew how to protect them’; it’s the worst form of neglect,” she said.
