Yankees Secure Series Win Against Mariners
SEATTLE — The Yankees showcased strong performances at T-Mobile Park, overpowering the Mariners to clinch a series victory.
Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt both hit home runs, contributing all five runs in a 5-3 win on Wednesday afternoon. Cam Schritter dominated on the mound, though the bullpen created a bit of tension later in the game.
Rice got things going with an RBI double in the first inning and then smashed his first home run of the season, a massive 427-foot shot in the ninth.
The left-handed hitter has reached base eight times over three consecutive games, consistently getting involved during offensive rallies.
“His at-bat was outstanding,” said manager Aaron Boone. “He showed great patience throughout this series, really. He capitalized on his opportunities and his last swing was particularly notable, extending our lead with that shot to right-center. He’s definitely in a groove, and we know what he can do.”
Rice reflected on the game, mentioning, “There were some fortunate bounces, but overall, I felt good about the at-bats I had.”
His contact was impressive too, with three batted balls clocked at 168.2 mph, 162.5 mph, and 98.9 mph on Wednesday. The 27-year-old stepped in as DH for Giancarlo Stanton, while Goldschmidt started his second game of the season against righty George Kirby.
After struggling initially with two strikeouts, Goldschmidt connected with a 97 mph fastball in the sixth inning for a three-run homer, pushing the Yankees to a 4-0 lead.
“He’s a pivotal part of this team, truly the heartbeat,” Boone noted. “Since joining us last year, he’s been a fantastic addition to our culture. When he gets a hit, it energizes everyone because they recognize how much he contributes. They want to support him.”
Goldschmidt, now 38, struggled last season with only three homers in 366 at-bats against right-handers. However, he maximized his opportunity against Kirby and even made contributions defensively at first base.
“When I returned, I was excited to have Benny on board and to take on the DH role,” Goldschmidt shared. “I figured my chances for regular play depended on injuries. I genuinely enjoy playing with this roster, being a Yankee, and I’m having a blast. This is a fantastic team with a chance to win; I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help out.”
