Ben White, CNBC contributor, dead after brief illness, partner says

Ben White, chief economics reporter at the news site Politico and a regular CNBC contributor, has died, his partner announced on social media.

White died on Saturday after a brief illness, his partner said.

“It is with broken hearts that I announce that Ben passed away on Saturday, June 1st after a short illness,” Sarah wrote on White’s X profile.

“He loved his family, was a journalist, supported the Yankees and Commanders and so much more.

“He will forever be in my heart and will be missed by many.”

During his more than 30 years as a journalist, White’s bylined articles have appeared in the Financial Times, the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Before joining Politico in 2009, he worked at The New York Times, where he won awards for his coverage of the financial crisis.

White was U.S. banking editor and Wall Street correspondent for the Financial Times from 2005 to 2007.

Former CNN employee John Harwood wrote: “Oh Sarah, so sorry and sad to hear this terrible news. Ben was such a great man. My heart is broken.”

Veteran reporter David Weigel wrote: “Terrible news. My condolences. I loved seeing Ben’s social media updates. He was happy in his home life even when the industry was screwing him. I’m glad you guys make each other so happy.

Politico’s Jack Schaefer called White “a great comrade, a brilliant journalist and a sports fan coup.”
