Benedict Cumberbatch recently shared insights about his parents’ wishes regarding his career choice. Despite their acting backgrounds, his mother and father—actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Bentham—strongly advised him against pursuing acting.

Reflecting on their discussions, Cumberbatch mentioned, “If there was pressure on the other side, it was like, ‘Don’t do what we’re doing. It’s a stupid way to spend your life.’” The anecdotes he shared highlight a chaotic home life, largely owing to the demands of the acting world. His parents wanted him to explore opportunities they felt were unavailable to them and encouraged him to consider a more stable profession, like law.

Interestingly, Cumberbatch admitted that despite their warnings, he was, in his words, “bitten by the bug” of acting. He explains that witnessing his parents in their prime ignited his passion for the craft.
