The Catholic University of Illinois is reaffirming its support for events like the “Trans Day of Remembrance,” which took place on November 20th at Benedictine College. This day is recognized nationally to honor transgender individuals who have fallen victim to anti-trans violence, according to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

A promotional graphic for the event stated: “Led by Mission & Ministry and Safe Spaces, we observe International Trans Remembrance Day and come together to remember those who have lost their lives to anti-trans violence.” It also emphasized a message of respect and love for every individual.

This graphic featured a quote from Fr. Mychal Judge, a gay priest known for his support to firefighters and victims during the 9/11 attacks. The quote read, “Even if no one tells you they love you today…you will always be embraced and loved by God.” Fr. Judge is remembered as the first recorded victim of the September 11 tragedy.

It’s important to note that Benedictine University in Illinois, which hosted the event, is distinct from Benedictine College, a Catholic institution in Kansas. Benedictine University has introduced the Safe Spaces program, aimed at empowering faculty and staff to create a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals.

The Safe Space program’s mission expresses a strong commitment to empathy and anti-hate initiatives, stating, “We welcome LGBTQ+ people with integrity and generosity.”

In a statement, Benedictine University defended the remembrance event, asserting that honoring the dignity of every person is integral to their Catholic identity. The university characterized the event as primarily a prayer service for those lost, reinforcing their commitment to Catholic social teachings. The statement emphasized the importance of remembering every life lost to violence.

Additionally, the university highlighted its ongoing commitment to creating a safe and inviting community for all, where individuals can unite in prayer, particularly during challenging times.
