Bengals Kicker Evan McPherson Almost Sets NFL Record
Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson came close to breaking the NFL record with a 67-yard field goal attempt against the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday. His kick was impressive, striking the crossbar before going through the uprights. Yet, there was a catch—Packers head coach Matt LaFleur called for a timeout just before the kick happened, although it didn’t seem to count. So, it appears complications came into play.
Currently, the record for the longest field goal stands at 66 yards, achieved by former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker. McPherson, at the time, really gave it his all. With a bit more help from the wind, who knows, he could have put Cincinnati on the scoreboard before halftime.
Regrettably, McPherson had to retry the kick, but this time, it lacked the same power and fell a few yards short. Packers cornerback Kayshawn Nixon managed to return it, but the play didn’t go far, wrapping up the first half without any further scoring.
While Tucker holds the record for the most successful kicks in 2021, Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little also hit a notable 70-yard field goal in a preseason game. So, even though McPherson’s attempt was remarkable, it remains an unofficial record.
At that moment, the Bengals were struggling offensively, especially with a new quarterback in place. They could definitely have used those points to help turn the game around.
Interestingly, Cincinnati recently made a surprising move by trading with the Cleveland Browns to bring in veteran quarterback Joe Flacco after Jake Browning stepped in when Joe Burrow got injured early in the season. Coach Zac Taylor is hopeful that Flacco will bring some energy to the offense, but so far, the first half didn’t show much improvement.
Despite their defense managing to limit the Packers to just 10 points, the Bengals ended up not scoring at all. A frustrating outcome for sure.
