Bengals receiver’s mysterious absence from season finale came days after alleged assault: report

Jermaine Barton didn't play with the Cincinnati Bengals over the weekend, and there seems to be a reason why.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the coaching staff filed a public records request with local police after Barton decided not to participate in Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The request produced two reports and an audio recording of a 911 call made by a woman who said she was assaulted by Barton on the morning of Dec. 30, three days before the game.

The Enquirer reported that the two went out together and got into an argument. Burton then allegedly followed the woman to her apartment, strangled her, stole her cellphone, held a knife to her neck and threatened to kill himself.

According to the newspaper, the woman called 911 and said, “Jermaine Barton of the Bengals just broke into my house.'' “He broke my phone. … He was pretty abusive. He does a lot of things that I don't tolerate.”

The woman also told police that Burton “broke into my house,” “hit me and left.”

In a statement, the Bengals said, “We are aware of the information regarding Jermaine Burton. We will continue to evaluate as we gather additional details and have no further comment at this time.”

Burton, who played at Alabama in 2022, allegedly punched a female Tennessee fan who stormed onto the field after the Volantes beat the Crimson Tide.

After the Bengals drafted Burton in the third round as the eventual replacement for Tee Higgins, head coach Zac Taylor said he was “really safe” in selecting him despite concerns about his character. I am deeply concerned,” he said.

Barton appeared in 14 games, but was rarely on the field and didn't take half of the offensive snaps in any game. He was targeted just 14 times on the season and had four receptions for 107 yards.
