Changing Landscape of Faith in Sports

Benjamin Watson asserts that the era of sidelined faith is behind us. Nowadays, athletes are stepping up to express their beliefs and speak out “more freely.”

Watson explains, “There was this idea that certain things were off-limits because they could be controversial and people might think differently.” He notes that younger individuals are sharing their convictions more than ever, especially regarding faith.

A former NFL player with 16 years of experience and a Super Bowl champion, Watson now serves as editor-in-chief for a magazine and hosts a podcast titled “The Just Life with Benjamin Watson” on Sports Spectrum.

Watson, who is a vocal Christian and pro-life advocate, also holds a position as vice president of U.S. strategic relations for a human rights organization.

“We are in partnership with Compassion International and Adoption Is An Option,” Watson mentioned, emphasizing their collaboration leading up to the Super Bowl, to raise awareness for these organizations. His hope is that they inspire sports fans to follow Jesus.

He believes there’s a growing comfort among players to discuss their faith. “More and more players are saying that,” he points out, likening this movement to a “forest fire” igniting within the league, encouraging others to join in, making them feel safe in expressing their beliefs.

Watson also notes that many new coaches are becoming more understanding and supportive of athletes speaking about their faith both on and off the field.

According to data Watson shared, a survey found that 74% of sports fans back athletes who utilize their platforms for meaningful causes, and 56% support those who share their faith.

Watson appreciates hearing players openly discuss their beliefs and their struggles. He feels it reflects their growth as they mature in various aspects of life.

He recalls that “My Cause My Cleats” initiative allowed players to champion causes close to their hearts during his last years in the league, with some being faith-driven.

One example he shares is Hunter Henry, a tight end for the New England Patriots, who adorned his cleats with designs representing Compassion, an organization focused on alleviating child poverty.

This approach, Watson believes, adds a human element to the players and shows that they continue to excel in various arenas.

Watson emphasizes the importance of leveraging sports to spread the gospel, noting that many may only hear it from athletes rather than in traditional church settings.

While he recognizes the church’s role in reaching people, he believes that God can use a multitude of avenues. “God can use anything,” he states, explaining that every person has a role in the mission, regardless of how or when they engage.

Watson admires NFL players like Aeneas Williams, Kurt Warner, Reggie White, and Darrell Green, who have been vocal about their faith.

In the past, players like AJ Brown have openly expressed their Christian beliefs during interviews, emphasizing gratitude for their opportunities on the field.

Texas quarterback CJ Stroud has also highlighted the value of having a supportive community of Christian athletes within the NFL.

Watson concludes by expressing hope that through their platforms, athletes can positively impact the world, helping others connect with Christ and understand God’s love for them, regardless of their past. He believes that this is the light they aim to share.
