Bernie Kosar’s Positive Update After Liver Transplant
Bernie Kosar, the renowned former quarterback for the Browns, has shared an uplifting message following his recent liver transplant at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He took to social media to announce his discharge from the hospital and expressed his excitement about the future.
“I’ve been discharged from the hospital and I’m feeling great,” Kosar stated in a video. “I’m ready to enjoy the rest of my week and the rest of my life. You matter!”
This surgery caps off a journey that began in July 2024, when he was diagnosed with cirrhosis and placed on a waiting list for a transplant. Just last week, surgery was delayed due to some internal bleeding that required multiple procedures to address.
At 61 years old, Kosar has faced various health challenges from his football days, including issues stemming from concussions.
Despite the hurdles, the Super Bowl XXVIII champion maintained a brave outlook. In a video shared before his procedure, he remarked, “Well, today may not be Victorious Monday on the soccer field, but here I am at University Hospital at 4:23 a.m. It’s definitely Victorious Monday for me.” He continued, “As you prepare for something as monumental and transformative as this in your life, you can’t help but reflect a little bit. And as I get down here today, I think about all the amazing, amazing support and fans that are there, and my amazing kids and family.”
Kosar’s football journey began at the University of Miami, where he played from 1982 to 1984 and led the team to its first national championship in 1983. The Browns picked him in the first round of the 1985 supplemental draft. He quickly became a fan favorite in Cleveland and solidified his status as a local legend after being released in 1993.
Afterward, he joined the Cowboys, acting as backup quarterback for Troy Aikman during their Super Bowl victory in 1995. Kosar then went to the Dolphins, where he backed up Dan Marino for three years before hanging up his cleats.
