Bernie Moreno: Healthcare Firms Gained Immense Wealth from Obamacare; We Need to See Accountability for Fraud

Healthcare Companies Profiting from Obamacare, Says Senator Moreno

During a recent roundtable event with Breitbart News, Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) criticized how healthcare companies have profited significantly from the Democrats’ implementation of Obamacare. He emphasized the need for accountability, suggesting that seeing perpetrators of fraud held accountable is crucial.

Moreno participated in a discussion alongside Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow and Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle, addressing questions from the audience. One participant inquired about actions the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is taking regarding fraudulent provider funds and how those funds could potentially lower healthcare premiums in Ohio.

In response, Moreno proposed the idea of introducing consumerism into healthcare, where individuals have clearer insights into costs. He stressed that subsidies should not be granted to insurance companies but rather to taxpayers, empowering them to have control over their healthcare spending.

The senator remarked, “Obama was the greatest thing that ever happened to insurance companies. These companies became filthy rich.” He attributed this wealth to Democrats directing funds to insurance firms without empowering individuals.

Moreno explained that by reallocating subsidies to taxpayers instead, they could use those funds to seek out better options. He mentioned that a significant crackdown on fraud within CMS could lead to greater efficiency within the system, potentially freeing up hundreds of billions of dollars across the country. He likened this to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps.

He elaborated on initiatives like the Working Families Tax Cuts, stating that they intended to ensure funds meant for food assistance were used effectively to combat child hunger in the U.S. However, he criticized the media portrayal of a proposed limit on fraud to six percent, noting that states like California and New York had much higher rates. “By the way, my personal point of view, fraud should be zero. Zero,” he asserted, highlighting the need for accountability.

Moreno further declared that mere discussions and committees aren’t enough. “I want to see people go to jail for a long time,” he stated. He concluded by reinforcing that individuals stealing from taxpayers should face severe consequences, insisting that this accountability is essential.
