Bernie Sanders Cautions That the Democratic Party Might Not Last

Bernie Sanders Raises Concerns About Future of Democratic Party

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders expressed his worries about the Democratic Party’s future during a recent episode of the New York Times podcast “The Opinion.” He noted that support for the party currently sits at just 33.4%, according to RealClearPolling.

On the podcast, Sanders emphasized that the party’s survival hinges on its ability to connect with the masses rather than catering solely to the elite. “One of the things I learned when I ran for president is that there’s not much in the Democratic Party,” he remarked, pointing out that influential individuals often dominate its structure. He acknowledged the chaotic nature of democracy, stating, “People don’t agree. They scream and scream at each other. As people say, democracy is messy in a way.”

He continued, expressing concern that many people associate the Democratic Party with exclusive gatherings in cities like New York and Los Angeles, where affluent individuals gather with political insiders. “That’s not a big party. It’s just kind of an elitist organization,” he added. Sanders argued that for the party to endure, it must open its doors to a larger segment of the population, allowing more voices to be heard and encouraging them to run for office.

Having run for president as a Democrat in both 2016 and 2020, Sanders reflected on the challenges he faced from the party establishment, which he claimed often dismissed candidates without elite credentials. “That’s the struggle: Are they going to open the door or are they literally prepared to lose the election and go down with the Titanic?” he questioned.

Additionally, Sanders placed some blame on Democratic leaders for alienating working-class voters, particularly regarding Kamala Harris’s loss in the upcoming November 2024 election. He highlighted data from The New York Times, which revealed that the party has lost around 2.1 million registered voters between 2020 and 2024. Many voters, it seems, now view the Democratic Party as “liberal, weak, and corrupt.”
