On Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders notably endorsed Zoran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race.
When the progressive senator from Vermont first commented on the NYC mayoral primary, he emphasized the need for fresh leadership shortly after the June 24 vote.
“This is a crucial moment in American history, and the current political landscape is not enough,” Sanders remarked in a statement.
“We require leadership that stands against the influence of powerful corporations and champions the working class. Zoran Mamdani embodies that vision. He is the right choice for New York City mayor.”
The 33-year-old Queens council member expressed his admiration for Sanders, calling him “the most impactful political figure of my life,” and eagerly embraced his endorsement.
“As mayor, I aim to follow his example by advocating for the working class consistently. I hope to make Brooklyn proud,” Mamdani shared on X.
Sanders’ backing comes shortly after Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, another prominent leftist, voiced her support for fellow socialists.
In the midst of a competitive race, the endorsements from two major progressive leaders could help strengthen Mamdani’s position against former Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
Mamdani has demonstrated strong grassroots fundraising and outreach efforts, focusing on appealing to a younger, more progressive demographic in New York City.
In 2021, Sanders chose not to endorse any candidate in the mayoral race and had only supported Bill de Blasio’s re-election shortly after the 2017 election.
Meanwhile, the New York Times editorial board has advocated for voters to consider alternatives to Mamdani.
“He seems to lack the political acumen and willingness to compromise that characterized Bernie Sanders, who successfully navigated his role as a democratic socialist,” the Times noted.
