Bernie Sanders Critiques Elon Musk’s Shift in Politics
Senator Bernie Sanders, representing Vermont, has harshly criticized Elon Musk, labeling him a “right-wing extremist” following the fallout between Musk and former President Donald Trump. Sanders claimed that Democrats should steer clear of collaborating with Musk.
Musk has previously expressed strong support for former President Obama, stating in April 2022 that he believed contemporary Democrats had been “hijacked by extremists.” Sanders mentioned during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash that Musk, who initially voted for Obama in 2008, has significantly changed his political views over the years, evolving into someone he considers far-right.
In Sanders’ view, the ongoing drama between Trump and Musk highlights a troubling trend in U.S. politics, suggesting that it resembles a conflict among oligarchs rather than a healthy democratic process. He referred to this feud as an “embarrassment” for those who value democracy and the rule of law.
According to Sanders, Musk once told Trump, “I spent $270 million to elect you,” underscoring concerns about the influence of wealthy donors in political campaigns. He recounted a tense exchange where Trump granted Musk some authority over government during his administration, only for Musk to become upset when Trump disagreed with his preferences for NASA leadership.
Musk’s relationship with Trump has been tumultuous, particularly after Musk faced backlash related to his management of government roles. He had been entrusted with leading initiatives aimed at reducing waste in federal spending but did not achieve the ambitious financial reforms he promised.
As tensions grew, Musk accused Trump of trying to manipulate Congress, asserting that his financial contributions during the campaign played a role in Trump’s victory. Trump, in return, indicated that Musk could face “serious consequences” if he continued to support Democratic candidates.
When Bash questioned whether Musk’s assertion that his financial backing was pivotal to Trump’s success was accurate, Sanders seemed to agree. It’s a complex web of political maneuvers and alliances—definitely not straightforward.
