Beryl to Regain Hurricane Strength Before Texas Landfall Monday

Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to weaken back to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane before making landfall on the central Texas coast on Monday morning, with National Hurricane Center officials warning of the threat of flooding from storm surge and intense rainfall.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports Tropical Storm Beryl has sustained winds of 65 mph with stronger gusts. Wind speeds are expected to increase to Category 1 hurricane speeds of 85 mph before making landfall near Matagorda Bay, Texas. Forecasters say Beryl could reach Category 2 status.

Officials reported the main danger from Beryl would be a storm surge of 4 to 6 feet from Matagorda Bay to San Luis Pass, along with localized rainfall amounts of up to 15 inches.

The NHC also warned of the possibility of tornadoes along the central and north Texas coast.

Surfers have taken to beaches near Port Aransas, Texas, despite warnings of strong waves and dangerous rip currents, in conditions that officials say could be life-threatening.

Forecasters say hurricane-force winds will reach the Texas coast just after midnight Monday. After moving inland along a northwesterly track, the storm is expected to move north along the west side of the Houston metropolitan area by Monday afternoon before turning northeasterly into the depths of East Texas.
