Financial Reporting Crackdown Announced in Minnesota

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reported on Friday that a significant effort is underway to enhance financial reporting in Minnesota. This comes amid an ongoing investigation into a fraud scheme affecting the state.

The Treasury Department plans to implement geographic targeting orders aimed at money services businesses, which include operations like money transfers and check cashing. The goal is to ensure that any potentially illegal activities are reported to the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Bessent mentioned that there would be increased monitors of funds sent to countries like Somalia.

Bessent shared on X, “This important tool is used to ensure that information about such illegal activities is promptly reported. This will increase scrutiny of funds sent to areas of concern such as Somalia and will allow law enforcement to develop further leads.” He also noted that officials from the Treasury are on-site in Minnesota to look into financial services firms possibly linked to the fraudulent activities.

Aside from the current investigation, Bessent had previously announced a probe into what he described as “reckless mismanagement” by Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz. This related to allegations of $250 million being misappropriated through fraudulent COVID-19 initiatives.

The scandal initially revolved around a nonprofit named Feeding Our Future, accused of creating fake meal sites to defraud government programs. So far, over 77 individuals have been charged, many from the local Somali community.

Local Republican lawmakers have claimed that the extent of the fraud could total more than $2 billion, hidden within various nonprofit schemes. The House Oversight Committee underscored the issue of widespread fraud in Minnesota’s social services under Governor Walz’s administration.

Amid all this, former President Trump expressed his views on Truth Social, criticizing the Somali community and advocating deportations for “Somali gangs” he claimed were causing chaos. Minnesota Democrats, including Governor Walz and Representative Ilhan Omar, pushed back against Trump’s comments, emphasizing the contribution of the Somali community to the state’s economy and culture.

Walz responded, stating, “If you commit a crime, you go to prison. It doesn’t matter your race, ethnicity or religion. But to demonize an entire group of people based on their race or ethnicity? That’s something I hope we never have to see.”
