Mayor Critiques Officer for Leaving to Join Reality Show
J. William Reynolds, the mayor of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, expressed his discontent regarding Sean Reifel’s resignation from the police force to participate in Season 8 of “Love Island USA.”
Reynolds conveyed his disappointment that Reifel left less than a year after being sworn in, mentioning concerns about investment disparities in training and community services, as reported by local outlet WHTM on May 29.
“Our police department invested significant time and taxpayer money to train him at the police academy,” Reynolds remarked.
“I never thought I’d live to see the day when a reality TV show would take precedence over being a police officer in America,” he added.
According to a Facebook post from the Bethlehem Police Department, Reifel was sworn in by Mayor Reynolds on August 18, 2025, and pledged to serve and protect the city with integrity and professionalism.
Reynolds further highlighted the community-wide implications of Reifel’s decision to step away. “It’s unfortunate that he’s leaving because it creates another vacancy in our department, which won’t be filled until next year,” he noted.
Bethlehem Police Chief Michel Cotto also commented on Reifel’s departure during a police station meeting on May 30. “I appreciate Sean. He was a good man and a great officer, and I’m disappointed,” she said.
“We work very hard to recruit the best individuals for our police department,” Cotto continued, remarking on how Reifel’s sudden exit wasn’t a good look.
“Departments nationwide are finding it tough to fill positions,” she added.
Reifel’s final day on duty was May 20, just ahead of the June 2 premiere of “Love Island USA” Season 8. In his first episode, he quickly began a romance with Paralympian Beatrice Hutz, sharing multiple passionate moments as their relationship unfolded.
