Bethnia Rainey-Hamilton Returns to Court for Liberty
The last time Bethnia Rainey-Hamilton graced the court at Barclays Center, it was a jubilant celebration, with confetti in Liberty colors marking the team’s first WNBA championship in 2024.
Fast forward to Saturday, and she made her much-anticipated return to fans during a preseason game against the Fever.
This marked her first match in two long years, delayed largely due to a knee injury.
“It feels amazing to be back on the court,” she expressed on Monday. “You sort of check in with how your body moves. It was fun, getting back into that competitive vibe.”
The 6-foot player had to sit out the 2025 season after the Liberty made the tough choice to suspend her contract.
At that time, she was recovering from knee surgery, her fourth operation since late 2021, and was projected to be out for the remainder of that season.
The team kept her exclusive negotiation rights and re-signed the 32-year-old on April 15, though details of the contract weren’t disclosed right away.
During Saturday’s game, Laney-Hamilton made a mark with two goals and one assist in just 12 minutes. However, she found it hard to judge her progress due to the nature of preseason games.
“It was decent. I think it was more encouraging than just stepping out without a plan,” she shared.
Her teammate, Jonquel Jones, noted, “I think she moves really well. She’s done a great job rehabbing and getting back into game shape. Sure, by October everyone will have evolved, but right now, she looks good.”
The Liberty continues to keep a close eye on her development.
Laney-Hamilton was aware of her playing time limits and was seen riding her bike after practice on Monday.
Coach Chris DeMarco commented on her initial performance, stating, “You could see the effort and communication. She was proactive, asking our staff questions, which is always a good sign. I was really pleased with how she played.”
Meanwhile, Marine Fortwo is looking forward to welcoming Marine Johannes, expressing the excitement that comes with the pair’s addition.
Both athletes have a history from their time on the national team, and Fortwo humorously noted the lack of a nickname to distinguish them.
“I can see that happening here in New York,” Fortwo chuckled.
In other news, Sato Sabally, absent from the preseason game for “rehab,” participated fully in Monday’s practice.
