Texas Representative Beto O’Rourke expressed his concerns about potential parallels between the current state of political affairs and the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany during a discussion. He noted that he can only “imagine history books” in 2025 recounting events that, in his view, echo the troubling times of 1933 Germany.
During a podcast featuring Democratic voices, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, O’Rourke praised Texas Democrats for their commitment, referring to them as “the very last line of defense” of democracy. This comes as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton remarked on his investigation into those who allegedly broke the law by aiding Texas Democrats in their efforts to avoid a quorum.
O’Rourke boldly predicted that Republicans and the Trump administration will be remembered negatively, drawing a comparison to the rise of the Nazis. “I can only imagine a history book written 100 years from now,” he stated, recalling how swiftly democracy was dismantled in Germany following the appointment of Hitler in January 1933.
“They’ve passed enabling laws just like Republicans are doing today,” he added, alluding to contemporary political dynamics. His critiques of President Trump have previously included sharp comparisons to Hitler regarding various policies, especially those related to immigration.
In reflecting on the rhetoric surrounding migration, O’Rourke expressed that terms like “invasion” evoke memories of Germany’s dark past, stating, “I don’t expect that in the United States.” He previously warned about the risks of America slipping into a similar autocratic state post-Trump’s presidency, despite his loss in 2020.
Following O’Rourke’s comments, Fox News Digital reported that Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, requested an investigation into O’Rourke’s political action committee for possibly violating laws by gathering support for Texas Democrats seeking to leave the state.
