John David Ashton, the actor who starred opposite Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop, has died at the age of 76. TMZ reported on sunday.
A representative for Ashton told the outlet that he died Thursday in Fort Martin. Collins, Colorado, after a battle with cancer.
The Springfield, Massachusetts, native appeared in more than 200 films and stage productions during his 50-year career, including three of the four Beverly Hills Cop films that began in 1984.
His latest film, in which he plays straight Chief John Taggart to Murphy's wisecracking Axel Foley, premiered on Netflix earlier this year. Judge Reinhold played Billy Rosewood, the affable detective between the two.
Ashton's other credits include “M*A*S*H,” the 1987 John Hughes comedy-drama “Some Kind of Wonderful,” starring Lea Thompson and Eric Stoltz, and the 1988 action film “Some Kind of Wonderful.” He previously appeared opposite Robert De Niro in the comedy “Midnight Run.'' ”
The sports fan later took a break from acting and became co-host of 870 ESPN Radio's “The Ashton & Davis Show.''

Ashton's agent, Alan Summers, also told TMZ, “John left behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. His memories are extended to his wife, children, grandchildren, and his brothers, sisters, extended family; He will be forever cherished by all who loved him. John's impact on the world will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.”
Donations in John's memory may be directed to Pathways Hospice Care of Larimer County, Colorado.
