The disturbing incident came to light in February after an explicit image of the faces of 16 13- to 14-year-old eighth-graders on artificially generated nude bodies was shared through a messaging app. Although the victim’s gender has not been disclosed, the incident shocked the community and raised serious concerns about the misuse of emerging technology.

This type of AI-generated images, known as “deepfakes,” can be highly convincing to untrained observers. Breitbart News previously reported that apps that generate deepfake porn are exploding in popularity.

Superintendent Michael Breggie said the five expelled students were deemed to have been “most egregiously involved” in the creation and distribution of explicit images. Although the withdrawal agreement is confidential, the withdrawal agreement outlines the length and duration of the student’s withdrawal and the conditions under which he or she may return to the school.

The incident not only sparked outrage from parents, but also attracted the attention of law enforcement authorities. Beverly Hills Police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office are currently investigating the incident, but so far no arrests or charges have been made.

Parents have expressed their anger and frustration over the incident, with one parent stressing the need for serious consequences: “There has to be some serious consequences for that.” In an email to concerned parents, the school district expressed its firm stance against such misuse of AI, stating that “any student who is found to be creating, distributing, or in possession of these types of AI-generated images The student will face disciplinary action including, but not limited to, a recommendation for expulsion.”

Understandably, students felt unsafe and fearful, with one anonymous student telling NBC4: They are afraid of people showing off explicit photos of themselves. ”
