Bible Sales Surge to Highest Levels in Almost 30 Years in the U.K.

The rise in Bible sales isn’t limited to the United States; recent data indicates a similar trend in the UK.

NielsenIQ BookData’s latest report suggests that Bible sales in the UK and Ireland are projected to increase by 19% in 2025, marking the highest figures recorded since 1998.

However, while certain titles are performing well, overall nonfiction book sales have seen a downturn. Spending on nonfiction dropped to its lowest levels since 2014, decreasing about 5% year-over-year, and the number of copies sold fell by 6%, tallying around 59 million.

On the other hand, adult fiction has seen a boost, with a 5% increase in spending. NielsenIQ BookData aligns with other reports, including from faith-based SPCK Publishing, which noted in January a 134% rise in Bible sales since 2019.

The SPCK blog pointed out that the uptick in Bible purchases spans various age groups, particularly among younger audiences, who are showing renewed interest in the text.

“This isn’t merely about publishing trends; it’s indicative of a broader search for meaning and stability in our often chaotic world,” SPCK remarked. “People, especially young adults, are looking for grounding, hope, and a connection to something greater, even if that doesn’t always coincide with traditional church practices.”

In the United States, Bible sales have surged recently, with about 19 million copies expected to be sold in 2025, marking a 21-year peak. This represents a 12% increase from 2024 and nearly double the sales from 2019.

SPCK also suggested that following the pandemic, global uncertainties, and rapid advancements in technology—like artificial intelligence—many are reflecting on what can be deemed trustworthy and authentic. In light of this, the Bible has re-emerged as a source of reliability and human connection for many.

NielsenIQ BookData’s report coincided with the London Book Fair.
