Biden approves $567M in defense support for Taiwan, White House says

President Joe Biden on Sunday approved $567 million in defense aid to Taiwan, the White House said, adding that the U.S. is helping Taiwan strengthen its military in the face of rising tensions with China. This is the latest measure.

The United States is Taiwan's most important international backer and arms supplier, despite having no formal diplomatic relations.

China has repeatedly called on the United States to stop selling arms to Taipei, which it claims as territory.

The White House said in a statement that Biden has “authorized the Secretary of State to direct the withdrawal of up to $567 million in Department of Defense supplies and services and military education and training to support Taiwan.” Ta. ”

No further details were provided.

In April, Biden signed into law a hard-fought bill providing billions of dollars in new U.S. aid to Ukraine, as well as Israel and Taiwan for the war with Russia.

Taipei has complained of delays in the delivery of weapons from the United States, including improved F-14 fighter jets.

China considers democratically-ruled Taiwan to be its own territory and has ramped up military and political pressure over the past five years to assert its claims, a move strongly rejected by Taipei.
