President Biden’s re-election campaign has released its first ad attacking Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), former President Trump’s vice presidential running mate, over his stance on abortion.
“They don’t care” is the story of Hadley Duvall, a Kentucky woman who was raped by her stepfather from the age of 5 onwards and became pregnant at 12.
“The first thing I was told when I got a positive pregnancy test was that I had a choice,” Duvall says in the ad, “and I thought, if Roe v. Wade had been overturned sooner, I would never have heard this, and why would anyone ever get to hear this now?”
“Trump and J.D. Vance don’t care about women, and they don’t care about the girls in these situations,” she added.
The campaign will run the seven-figure ad in battleground states and during Saturday’s WNBA All-Star Game, “60 Minutes,” “The Bachelorette” and pre-Olympic coverage.
Biden’s campaign has been highlighting Vance’s stance on abortion since Trump nominated him for vice president on Monday, calling him a “proud anti-abortion ally.”
Vance has praised the overturning of Roe v. Wade and supports Texas’ ban on abortion, which allows no exceptions except when the mother’s life is at risk. In 2021, when asked whether there should be exceptions for rape and incest, he said, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
But he has begun to shift the way he speaks about abortion in recent weeks, mirroring President Trump’s position that abortion laws should be left to the states in the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Vice President Harris, who has been a leading White House voice on reproductive rights, criticized Vance for his support of abortion restrictions in a video released Wednesday.
Vance is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Wednesday night.
