Biden Addresses Nebraska Democrats
Former President Joe Biden addressed the Nebraska Democratic Party on Friday, asserting that the state is “back” following recent electoral victories. He criticized President Donald Trump for undermining the Constitution and reducing health care and food assistance for millions of Americans.
Biden, who is 82, spoke during the Nebraska Democratic Party’s Ben Nelson Gala in Omaha. He appealed to Republicans to resolve the ongoing government shutdown and mentioned that his late son Beau should have been the president, not him. “Democrats are back. That’s no exaggeration,” he stated, referencing the election outcomes.
Representative Mikie Sherrill and former Virginia Representative Abigail Spanberger celebrated victories in their gubernatorial races, while a surprising win was also seen as Zoran Mamdani became the new mayor of New York. This came a year after former Vice President Kamala Harris faced a challenging loss to Trump.
Biden, pointing to this electoral change, remarked, “The American people are sending a message to President Trump and his supporters,” criticizing Trump for disregarding democracy and prioritizing the wealthy. He emphasized, “Mr. President, I want you to know that you work for us. We don’t work for you… In a democracy, there is no king.” He expressed concern over the impact of Trump and the Republicans on health care, highlighting that over 300 rural hospitals nationwide face closures, including two in Nebraska.
Biden expressed moral outrage over current issues, stating, “I’ve never said anything like this in my career. I think this is immoral. It’s un-American. It’s completely wrong.” He spoke about his own health struggles, dealing with stage 4 prostate cancer, and praised the medical professionals aiding him. His family has faced cancer’s impact deeply, with his son previously serving in Iraq and battling terminal illness upon his return.
He criticized Trump’s planned renovations to the White House, particularly the demolition of the East Wing, calling it emblematic of Trump’s approach to governance. “When I left office, President Trump was trying to bring a wrecking ball into this country,” he remarked, alluding to the broader consequences of Trump’s presidency.
Biden accused Trump of worsening hunger across the nation, claiming that “one in five children goes to bed hungry every night.” He ridiculed Trump for hosting an extravagant Halloween party while slashing food aid for millions, saying it revealed “who he is.” He stated, “On Friday, we all dressed up like the rich people of the Roaring Twenties, and on Saturday we cut aid to 40 million Americans.”
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
