Biden Condemns Violence But Takes No Responsibility for Anti-Trump Rhetoric

President Joe Biden delivered a brief address to the nation on Sunday after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump shocked the nation.

President Biden said he had a “brief but meaningful conversation” with President Trump. He added that he and First Lady Jill Biden are praying for President Trump and his family, and offered his condolences to the families of the murdered victims.

Biden expressed his gratitude to the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies.

He condemned “this type of violence, or any violence,” but did not take responsibility for using divisive language against Trump.

Biden made the remarks during a conference call with donors last week, according to Politico., Trump Bullseye.”

Biden called for “unity” in a statement Sunday.

“Unity is the hardest goal to achieve, but nothing is more important right now. Unity will be fodder, there will be disagreements, that will stay the same, but we will never lose sight of the fact of who we are as Americans,” he said.

The president said he and Vice President Kamala Harris have been and will continue to be briefed on the situation by his homeland security team, including FBI Director Christopher Wray, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, his homeland security adviser, and his national security adviser. The president explained that the FBI is leading the investigation, which is still in its early stages.

Biden said he still had no information about the shooter’s motive and urged people not to speculate about the shooter’s motives or affiliations.

“I have directed that this investigation be conducted thoroughly and expeditiously, and investigators will take all necessary steps to carry it out,” he said.

Amid growing criticism from supporters about the level of security being provided to Trump, Biden said he had “consistently” directed the Secret Service to provide “all the resource capabilities and protective measures necessary to ensure the continued safety” of Trump.

Biden said he has directed the Secret Service to review all security measures ahead of the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to begin on Monday.

The president also said he would order an independent investigation to assess exactly what happened and would share its findings with the American people.

He added that he plans to deliver a “longer” speech from the Oval Office later in the day.

President Biden did not answer any questions.
