“Serving as your president has been the honor of my life,” Biden said in a statement. “While I intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and our country that I step down and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my presidency for the remainder of my term.”
In his statement, he thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for “being a tremendous partner in all of this effort,” but explicitly endorsed her as his successor.
But in a statement later posted to X, Biden said he “fully endorses and supports Kamala as our party’s nominee this year.” Biden then called on Democrats to unite, writing, “It’s time to come together and defeat Trump.”
