An ailing President Joe Biden, who is trailing in the polls, touted the slew of criminal cases against former President Donald Trump during a rally speech in Detroit, Michigan, on Friday.
Biden called Trump a “convicted criminal” and chanted “send him to prison” before detailing a list of federal and state cases that his administration and Democratic prosecutors in New York and Georgia have pursued against the opposition leader.
Biden said:
No more! No more excuses, Donald. Today we’re putting the spotlight on Donald Trump. [Coughs] We’re going to do something the media hasn’t done before. [sic]But I think they will soon, it will become clear who he is and what he is up to. Folks, Donald Trump is a convicted criminal.
[Crowd cheers, chants “Lock him up!”]
He was convicted of 34 felony counts by a jury of his peers in 2016 for making hush money payments to porn actresses and hiding it from voters. Donald Trump was found responsible for the sexual assaults, but the judge said not to be fooled by Trump’s attempts to downplay them. Here’s what the judge wrote: “Mr. Trump has attempted to downplay and has downplayed the sexual abuses.” The judge in that case wrote: [sic] Trump “raped” her. That’s the judge’s word, not mine. He raped her as most people understand the word rape. Folks, Donald Trump is a business fraudster. He lost his license to do business in New York State. He was fined over $400 million for giving false information to banks. And he’s still being prosecuted.[s] He faces criminal charges for mishandling classified information. He is still being indicted for his role in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election on January 6th. He is still being indicted on election interference charges in Georgia. Remember his phone call? “We only need 11,780 votes.” [sic]Name another president who has done that.
Biden ignored some inconvenient facts.
- The media has largely avoided negative reporting about Trump, and there are no “excuses.”
- Trump was convicted not of paying “hush payments” but of failing to report them as campaign expenses – something he was not legally required to do before Election Day in 2016. The case is widely considered a hoax.
- Biden Misquoted The judge in the civil lawsuit against Trump did not say that Trump referred to sexual abuse as “frivolous,” but rather said that Trump’s defense was “frivolous” (in the judge’s opinion). The judge’s assertion that Trump “raped” author E. Jean Carroll is contradicted by a jury’s finding that Trump did not actually rape her.
- Trump lost his license to operate in a fraud case pursued by Democratic prosecutors before a Democratic judge who targeted him for his campaign promises. The case involved a law that had never been applied before in New York state. The fine was appealed, and the appeals court put a stay on enforcement of the fine pending the appeal.
- The $454 million fine in Trump’s fraud case was widely seen as excessive, and Trump Winner He filed an appeal to suspend collection of the fine while posting $175 million bail, pending an appeal of the lower court’s ruling.
- Trump’s trial for “mishandling of classified information” is in serious jeopardy due to challenges to the prosecution’s mishandling of evidence and the constitutionality of the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith. Biden himself only escaped prosecution for the same crimes because he was deemed too old and infirm to stand trial.
- The lawsuit against President Trump for the January 6 incident is likely to be dismissed following Supreme Court rulings on abuse of power by the Department of Justice and official immunity for a president in office.
- Biden misquoted Trump in a call with Georgia officials, saying he never ordered them to find polling places and simply said he believed the votes, if properly counted, would give him the results he needed to win.
- Biden ignored the fact that the prosecution’s investigation into Trump in Georgia is collapsing under allegations of prosecutorial misconduct that could result in District Attorney Fani Willis being removed from the case.
Saturday The Wall Street JournalColumnist Holman Jenkins I remembered The prosecution of Trump began in earnest after information was leaked from the White House to the State Department in April 2022. The New York Times Biden was reportedly unhappy with Attorney General Merrick Garland, who said, “Mr. Biden confided to his aides that former President Donald J. Trump was a threat to democracy and should be prosecuted.” Times report at that time.
President Biden has tried in the past to argue that the prosecution against Trump is free from political interference, despite evidence that the White House has met with some prosecutors and the unusual situation of former senior Justice Department official Matthew Colangelo leaving Washington to lead the prosecution against Trump in a Manhattan courthouse.
Now, the Biden campaign is fully committed to attacking Trump as a “convicted felon.”
