On Wednesday, former President Joe Biden revealed he is working on a memoir, urging world leaders to remain “engaged” after his presidency.
In a keynote address during a Q&A at the San Diego Human Resources Management Association (SHRM) conference, Biden, who is now 82, made his announcement. “Well, you know… that sounds a bit odd… The thing is, you don’t have much time,” he said in response to a question.
Biden remarked that it’s customary for presidents to pen memoirs, noting, “It can take three to six years for most of them.” However, his publisher is expecting his third memoir “this year.”
The book will focus solely on his time as Commander-in-Chief, which Biden mentioned should make the writing process a bit easier.
“I’m really pushing myself to write another 500-page book,” he shared with SHRM CEO Johnny C. Taylor Jr. “I conduct a lot of research, too,” he added.
Biden reflected on his presidency, mentioning how much effort he put into various initiatives. “It’s evident to me that President Trump rolled back several of my policies,” he stated, expressing concern over the rapid changes happening in the country.
He highlighted the expansion of NATO, describing it as chaotic when he assumed office, and emphasized the importance of addressing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Interestingly, Biden noted that he still receives calls from U.S. allies. “I’m getting lots of calls—European leaders want me to get involved,” he said. “But I’m not, you know, I’m not going to take those calls,” he added, almost apologetically.
Biden has been reflecting on his post-presidential life since leaving office. He mused about how others often suggest that promoting “world peace” could be a worthwhile endeavor in retirement.
In a somewhat humorous remark, he said, “How can I just leave?” defending his ongoing involvement.
Biden shared anecdotes about his daily life, mentioning his love for his vintage cars, specifically a Corvette, while joking about having “my rubber in my driveway.” It’s those little moments he cherishes, especially since stepping back from political campaigns.
Recently, Biden faced health challenges, having been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. But he is focused on family, mentioning how he stays in touch with his grandchildren every day.
