On Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “11th Hour,” host Stephanie Ruhle responded to Republican accusations that President Joe Biden is trying to buy votes with his student loan plan by saying, “Isn’t that how you do politics? Fulfilling campaign promises to certain groups.” She then argued that former President Donald Trump, a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, and other Republicans are doing the same thing by allowing people to keep more of their money through tax cuts.
Ruhl said:[L]Let’s talk about Joe Biden and student loan tax cuts. Republicans are strongly against this, saying Joe Biden is buying votes. If you’re doing it for college graduates, what about those who don’t go to college? They get nothing and are left behind. Isn’t that how politics works? The carried interest loophole only helps the private equity industry. It doesn’t help us. Only corporate tax cuts will help. [help] “Making corporations pay taxes doesn’t help all of us. If Donald Trump goes to Mar-a-Lago and says, ‘I’m going to lower taxes,’ he’s going to lower taxes for the richest people. In other words, buying votes is just the way politics works, fulfilling election promises to specific groups.”
