President Joe Biden statement This comes after a Manhattan court jury returned a 34-count guilty verdict against former President Donald Trump on Thursday.
Trump was convicted by a jury after less than two days of deliberations in a criminal case over hush money paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
“An increasingly insane campaign of revenge and retaliation.”
“Today in New York, we saw that no one is above the law,” Biden said in a statement. “Donald Trump has always mistakenly believed that he could break the law for his own self-interest and face no punishment. But today’s sentence does not change the simple reality facing the American people: There remains only one way to keep Donald Trump from the Oval Office: the ballot box.”
Ironically, Trump appears to agree with the Biden team that the final decision should be made by vote, with the former president making vehement comments to the media at the courthouse in opposition to the ruling.
“Whether or not he is convicted, Trump will still be the Republican nominee for president,” Biden continued in the statement.
“The threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater. He has waged an increasingly frenzied campaign of revenge and retaliation, vowed to be a dictator ‘from day one’, and called for ‘abandoning’ the Constitution to regain and retain power. A second term for Trump would mean chaos, curtailment of American freedoms, and incitement to political violence – and the American people will reject it this November.”
“Our country has gone to hell”
In fiery comments after the verdict, Trump maintained his innocence and accused the Biden administration of orchestrating the prosecution.
“It’s OK. I’m fighting for my country. I’m fighting for the Constitution. The whole country is being rigged right now. This is something the Biden administration has done to motivate and hurt their political opponents,” Trump said.
“I think this is just a disgrace. We’re going to keep fighting,” he continued. “We’re going to fight to the end, and we’re going to win, because our country has gone to hell.”
President Trump on Wednesday slammed a Fox News anchor who claimed to his lawyers that the Biden administration was not intervening in the criminal proceedings against the former president.
A judge ruled in September that Trump had unfairly inflated the size of his real estate holdings to fraudulently obtain favorable insurance and loans from banks and other institutions.
The former president also faces criminal charges for allegedly attempting to illegally overturn the official results of the 2020 presidential election.
