President Biden said in a Sunday op-ed for The Washington Post that the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol reminded Americans that democracy is “never guaranteed.”
“Every year, we should commit to remembering January 6, 2021. To remember it as the day our democracy was tested and won. Remember, nothing is guaranteed,” Biden said. said in the posted article.
“We must never forget that it is democracy that makes all of our freedoms, rights, liberties and dreams possible,” he added. “And it's up to Americans of every generation to protect and protect it.”
Monday marks four years since the Jan. 6 attack. After Congress certified Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election, President-elect Trump promised clemency for the rioters who showed up at the Capitol that day. The president-elect also hinted that some pardons could be granted within the first hours of his second term.
“Violent insurrectionists stormed the Capitol, threatened the lives of elected officials and assaulted brave law enforcement officers,” Biden said of the Jan. 6 attack. “We should be proud that our democracy withstood this attack. And we should be glad that we won't see another such shameful attack this year.”
“But we must not forget. We must remember the wisdom of the saying that a nation that forgets its past is doomed to repeat it. A repeat of what happened four years ago. cannot be accepted,” he added.
Also on Sunday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the violence of the Capitol attack “didn't end that day.”
“It wasn't over that day,” Pelosi said on CBS News' Margaret Brennan's “Face the Nation.” “as you know, [President-elect Trump] “I called on these people to continue their violence. My husband was a victim of all of them and still bears the injuries from those attacks.”
