Biden Makes a 'Wrecking Ball' Remark While Criticizing Trump in Omaha Speech

Biden’s Return to Politics: A Critique of Trump

On Friday night, Joe Biden reappeared in the political scene, taking aim at former President Donald Trump during an event in Omaha. This time, Trump’s speechwriter managed to dig up a fairly predictable metaphor.

Biden remarked, “I knew Mr. Trump was going to bring a wrecking ball into this country, but honestly, I didn’t realize how much that would mean.” His comment referred to Trump’s plans for the East Wing Ballroom at a gala hosted by the Nebraska Democratic Party.

“This is emblematic of his presidency,” Biden stated, claiming Trump has swung the wrecking ball not only into American homes but also into the Constitution, the rule of law, and democracy itself.

The 46th president, occasionally mumbling and squinting at the teleprompter, also criticized some of the changes Trump made to the White House.

“He says we are now in a ‘golden age,'” Biden said, adding, “The only gold is what’s on the mantle,” a nod to the gold leaf reinforcement in the Oval Office.

Then he shifted from the idea of gold to a more somber tone.

“Look, folks, this is not a golden age,” he told attendees at a fundraising dinner. “It’s actually a very dark moment.”

However, moments later, Biden expressed optimism, celebrating Democratic wins in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and California, declaring, “Something very special happened just last Tuesday.”

“The Democrats are back!” he proclaimed.

While mainstream media highlighted these electoral victories, some conservative voices pointed out that the wins occurred in states already led by Democrats, which, as House Speaker Mike Johnson (D-Louisiana) commented, was “not surprising.”

It was noted in a coverage piece that since leaving office, Biden had largely stayed out of the political spotlight.

According to reports, many Democrats seem keen to move past Biden. Former President Barack Obama did not engage in recent gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, despite invitations to campaign events there.

Yet, Biden hasn’t veered away from his tendency to embellish his achievements. He took to the stage for a 30-minute speech, revisiting some of his well-worn lines while overstating the role of trade unions in building the middle class, and mentioning “people” multiple times.

He even discussed his prostate cancer treatment to further challenge Trump, stating, “We thank God for our doctors and nurses and for the amazing progress in cancer research.” He criticized Trump and his Republican allies for cutting health care funding, making it more expensive for many Americans.

He underscored the ongoing government shutdown, noting that Senate Democrats are pushing for an extension of health care subsidies before agreeing on a funding resolution. Biden argued that Republicans are seeking to trim subsidies to provide “$4 trillion in tax cuts” to the wealthy.

As of Saturday, the White House had not yet responded to Biden’s speech.
