Biden must fix our broken extradition process with the UK

As all attention is focused on the conviction of former President Donald Trump, we must not forget that in lesser known cases, justice has been delayed, sometimes for years, for entirely avoidable reasons.

a A majority of Americans say the U.S. criminal justice system is not strict enough. And the Biden administration must especially work harder to hold accountable those criminals who seek to do America harm.

As a long-time member of Congress, I have experienced firsthand the drafting and creation of U.S. laws that affect millions of Americans. It is clear that Congress needs to investigate and take action when it comes to criminal aliens engaging in legal maneuvering to avoid being held accountable for their crimes in the United States.

Since 2012, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been fighting to prevent his extradition from the UK to face charges of espionage that endangered the lives of US soldiers. The case has been going on for 14 years, but it is a shame that extradition procedures with the UK are so outdated that leakers of classified national security information have yet to be held accountable in a US court of law.

Recently, Assange A London court has said the US extradition request can be appealed. The Biden administration has assured Assange that he will not face the death penalty if extradited. He even announced that he would consider a pardon. Assange.

Another man fighting extradition from Britain to the US is Pakistani businessman Arif Naqvi, sometimes called the Middle East’s Bernie Madoff. Mr Naqvi founded the region’s largest buyout fund and managed almost $10 billion in assets. Assets: $14 billion They are suspected of defrauding US investors. Public pension funds, Bank of America, US, England The French government invested in the fund, which aims to support human prosperity in emerging markets.

The fund collapsed in 2018, according to U.S. prosecutors. Naqvi was masterminding a global criminal conspiracy. Naqvi fraudulently transferred over $780 million to himself and others to fund his billionaire lifestyle. The American taxpayer, in whom the US government invested $150 million, became a victim of this fraud. Naqvi now lives a lavish lifestyle in London while: He is fighting U.S. attempts to extradite him.

The Biden administration needs to work with the UK because the extradition agreement we have in place has repeatedly fallen short. In late 2022, British businessman Graham Bonham Carter He was arrested by the UK National Crime Agency The U.S. Department of Justice has sought Bonham Carter’s extradition to face economic crime charges related to financing real estate and art purchases by a billionaire Russian oligarch with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Sanctions violations and wire fraud.

Bonham Carter’s case was eventually settled When America gave up With Russian oligarchs and their proxies having such a strong footprint in Britain, it once again highlights the need for fundamental reform of the extradition treaty between the United States and the UK.

Whether it’s Julian Assange leaking classified information, Arik Naqvi defrauding American investors, or someone helping a Russian oligarch violate US sanctions laws, our political leaders need to act. In Congress, this is an area where Democrats and Republicans can work together and negotiate with the UK government after the next election to extradite criminals who break US laws.

The extradition system between the United States and the UK is not working, and these close allies should work together to strengthen their extradition treaty to ensure the US government can bring to justice individuals who have done harm to the US.
