President Joe Biden plans to take a very aggressive stance in his debate with former President Donald Trump, according to a Biden campaign official.
Biden’s most important task is “to demonstrate that he is undiminished and capable of carrying out the duties of the presidency in a second term,” said Alan Lichtman, a history professor at American University. Said of Financial Times on friday.
“[Biden] “The debate needs to shake things up,” said political analyst Charlie Cook. “Debates don’t usually do that, but they certainly could. They’re not often known for potentially being a turning point in a presidential election, but a debate certainly could be.”
A recent Quinnipiac University poll found that a staggering 67 percent of voters believe Biden is too old to serve a second term.
As of May, the White House would neither confirm nor deny whether Biden intended to use performance-enhancing drugs in his debate preparations. Biden’s former chief of staff, Ron Klain, who is on leave to help Biden with debate preparations, did not respond to Playbook’s request for comment on whether illegal drugs were being used as part of Klain’s debate preparations.
A Biden campaign official said Biden would be “punchier” in the debate and portray himself as “steady” and “smart.”
“The president has become increasingly aggressive in his rhetoric about Trump recently and will bring that theme to the debate, but he also plans to continue to portray himself as a wise and stable leader, in contrast to the chaos and division that Trump portrays,” the official said. Times.
Biden’s attacks will reportedly focus on Trump being a threat to democracy, an accusation that many believe doesn’t address the problems facing the nation, including rising inflation, stagnant wages, open borders and immigrant crime.
The official added that this would also include Trump’s actions “stripping away reproductive rights, inciting political violence, undermining democratic institutions and patronizing billionaire donors to fund tax cuts for the super-rich and corporations at the expense of seniors and the middle class.”
Many independent voters will tune into next week’s presidential debate looking for Biden’s answers on health, inflation and open borders, according to recent Reuters focus groups.
The focus groups included seven men and eight women from battleground states, representing a range of ages, political parties and races. According to Reuters, nine of them “had previously voted for Biden” but were dissatisfied with his leadership, while three interviewees were dissatisfied with Trump but did not see Biden as a legitimate alternative.
