With just hours left in his administration, President Joe Biden preemptively pardoned former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, retired Gen. Anthony Fauci, and members of the Jan. 6 Commission.
In a statement released at 7 a.m. Monday morning, just hours before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, the White House released a statement from Biden, praising them as “dedicated and selfless public servants.” .
He said he believed in the rule of law, “but this is an exceptional situation and I cannot do anything in good conscience.”
Republicans on the House Oversight Committee reminded Americans that Biden also pardoned his son Hunter Biden. The outgoing president had told the country that he would not issue pardons.
Joe Biden will be remembered for spending his final weeks in office defending his son from the law and defending himself.
Biden's full statement reads:
Our nation depends on dedicated and selfless public servants every day. They are the lifeblood of our democracy.
Alarmingly, however, public servants continue to face threats and intimidation for faithfully discharging their duties.
In some cases, people have even been threatened with criminal prosecution, including General Mark A. Milley, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, and members and staff of the task force investigating the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. There is. These public servants serve our country with honor and honor and do not deserve to be subject to unjust and politically motivated prosecution.
General Milley served our country for more than 40 years, holding multiple command and leadership positions and being deployed to some of the most dangerous regions of the world to protect and defend democracy. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he led our military to address complex global security threats and strengthened existing alliances while forging new ones.
For more than half a century, Dr. Fauci has served our country. He saved countless lives by managing the government's response to pressing health crises such as HIV/AIDS, the Ebola virus, and the Zika virus. During my tenure as Chief Medical Advisor, he helped this country deal with a once-in-a-century pandemic. America is safer and healthier because of him.
On January 6, 2021, American democracy was put to the test when a mob stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn a fair and free election through force and violence. Given the importance of this day, Congress established a bipartisan task force to investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol to investigate and report on the facts, circumstances, and causes of the riot. The Special Committee carried out this mission with integrity and determination to discover the truth. Rather than accept responsibility, those who carried out the January 6th attacks are using every opportunity to rewrite history, erase the stain of January 6th for partisan strategy, and seek revenge. In an effort to undermine and intimidate those who participated in the special committee. Threaten criminal prosecution.
I believe in the rule of law and am optimistic that the strength of our legal institutions will ultimately trump politics. However, this is an exceptional situation and nothing can be done in good conscience. Baseless and politically motivated investigations wreak havoc on the lives, safety, and economic security of targeted individuals and their families. Even if an individual has done nothing wrong, is in fact doing the right thing, and is ultimately acquitted, the mere fact of being investigated or prosecuted can cause irreparable damage to their reputation and finances. It may cause damage.
That's why I am exercising my constitutional authority to pardon General Mark A. Milley, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, members of Congress and the staff of the task force, and the Capitol Hill and DC Metropolitan Police Department officers who testified. It is. Before the selection committee. The issuance of these pardons should not be misconstrued as an admission that an individual has engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance of a pardon be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any crime. Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless service to our country.
