President Joe Biden’s administration is currently protecting more than 860,000 foreign nationals from deportation from the United States through an expansion of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program.
According to data released by the Congressional Research Service, TPS under the Biden administration has protected approximately 864,000 foreign nationals who would otherwise be considered illegal immigrants and subject to deportation from the country.
Congressional Research Service Reports:
Currently, there are 16 countries that have received TPS designation. As of March 31, 2024, approximately 863,880 foreign nationals from the following countries who are present in the United States are protected by TPS:Afghanistan, Burma, Cameroon, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Yemen. In addition, certain Palestinians, Liberians, and Hong Kong residents currently living in the United States are currently receiving relief under the Deferred Enforced Departure Program. [Emphasis added]
The significant expansion of TPS under the Biden administration has been driven primarily by the roughly 345,000 Venezuelans, more than 200,000 Haitians, more than 180,000 Salvadorans, more than 54,000 Hondurans and more than 50,000 Ukrainians who have taken advantage of the quasi-amnesty program.
Most importantly, most aliens covered by TPS reside in just a few states: approximately 300,000 in Florida, 94,000 in Texas, 67,840 in New York, and 67,800 in California.
In April, Breitbart News reported that about 1.2 million foreign nationals are currently eligible for TPS.
TPS was first created under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) of 1990 to prevent federal immigration authorities from deporting people from countries designated as experiencing famine, war, or natural disasters.
Since the Clinton administration, TPS has morphed into a de facto amnesty program as the Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump and now Biden administrations continually renewed the program for different countries.
