Biden repeatedly urged Harris against breaking with him on policy: Report

A new book by reporters Jonathan Allen and Amy Parns said former President Biden reportedly urged Vice President Kamala Harris to infiltrate the policies he supported as Vice President in the presidential run.

“He'll publicly say that Harris should do what he has to do to win, but he repeated the warning, including a conversation with her: make sure there is no sunlight between us,” the author wrote.

Allen, a senior political reporter at NBC News, and Perns, a senior political correspondent at Hill, wrote a book set in April 2025 to publish a book titled “Fight: Inside the Wild the Wild Battle for the White House.” Perns published Book excerpt On the hill on Thursday.

“But the day of the debate, when Biden called on Harris to give him an extraordinary kind of pep talk, and another reminder of the loyalty he demanded. He was hoping that Harris would protect his legacy, as he could no longer protect his own record,” they wrote. “Whether she won or lost the election, he thought he would only hurt him by publicly distanced himself from him, especially in the debate monitored by millions of Americans.

According to the author, Biden told Harris “no sunlight, kids” during the phone call.

Harris was criticized through a campaign to not break with the president on more issues after she took his place at the top of the Democrat tickets.

Stephanie Cutter, a Democratic strategist and Harris' campaign aide, proposed a “list of all the items Harris was proud of in his work with Biden.”

“Wait, wait, wait!” Sean Clegg, Harris' advisor at the time, reportedly said that while preparing for a media interview, according to the book's Exterpt. “Don't do this. Don't go down the memory lane.”

“It was the last time he was invited to a media prep. Cutter, another Harris' best friend later joked and cut him out,” the author wrote.

Representatives for Harris and Biden did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Harris spoke with the co-host of “The View” in early October and talked about an extensive interview almost a month after Election Day. The interviews were viewed by many as a major turning point in her campaign.

“If anything, have you done something different to President Biden over the past four years?”

At the time, Harris replied, “There's nothing to think of.”
