Biden shrugs off age concerns during friendly “Late Night” chat with Seth Meyers

President Biden dismissed concerns about his age and lightly criticized former President Trump during a friendly chat with “Late Night” host Seth Meyers on Monday.

Meyers began the question-and-answer session by joking about Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report and telling Biden, “I mean, you’re 81 years old now.”

“Recent polls show that this is a major concern for American voters. How do we address this concern going forward as we head into the 2024 election?” Myers asked.

“Well, a few things. Number one, look at the other guy. He’s about my age, but he can’t remember his wife’s name,” Biden replied, drawing cheers from the crowd. I stirred it up.

“The second thing is how old your ideas are,” Biden continued. “Look, this guy is trying to bring us back. He’s trying to take us.” [back] Roe v. Wade case. He’s trying to take us back on a lot of issues that have been strong American positions for 50, 60 years. ”

The president went on to tout how his administration has accomplished “good things” and warn about what will happen if Trump returns to the White House.

“And I really think his views on where to take America are older than mine. I don’t want to move on anyway,” Biden said before Meyers walked away from the topic.

Polls show that an overwhelming majority of Americans, including Democrats, think Biden is too old to run for re-election, so his age and mental acuity are at stake. This has become a big problem.

But concerns were renewed earlier this month when a report on Mr. reached a certain level. The report also made the surprising conclusion that Mr. Biden could not be indicted even though Mr. Another reason was that people would view him as a “sympathetic and well-meaning old man with a poor memory.”

The political fallout began immediately with Biden’s prime-time, last-minute news conference. So he slammed several reporters, including CNN and the Washington Post, who asked about his age. Biden himself added gasoline to the fire during his speech by confusing the presidents of Mexico and Egypt when discussing the Israel-Hamas war, adding to his list of recent gaffes about world leaders.

Although many of Biden’s Democratic supporters continue to insist that he is capable of serving as president for four more years, top veteran strategists such as David Axelrod, Paul Begala and James Carville Some appear alarmed by the latest developments.

Even some media outlets, such as the New York Times, are calling for Biden to step down and for Democrats to choose another candidate at this summer’s Democratic National Convention.
