President Biden on Monday criticized former President Donald Trump, who said he believed abortion policy was best left to individual states, and the prospective Republican presidential nominee’s role in overturning Roe v. Wade.
“Donald Trump today made clear once again that he is the man responsible for ending Roe v. Wade more than anyone else in America,” Biden said in a statement. “Let’s have no illusions. If Donald Trump is elected and MAGA Republicans in Congress put a national abortion ban on the resolution desk, Trump will sign it into law.”
Earlier on Monday, President Trump posted a video on Truth Social suggesting that decisions on abortion policy should be left up to individual states. Abortion has been a volatile issue for Republicans since Roe was overturned, and Trump has suggested that the party adopt some kind of compromise to win the election.
“We have to win this election to restore our culture and actually save our country, which is currently and very sadly in decline,” Trump said.
In the video, President Trump said he was “proudly responsible” for ending Roe v. Wade and falsely implied that it was “something that all the jurists on both sides called for.” He did not support specific abortion restrictions.
In response, Biden said Trump was “just lying” about his support for overturning Roe. “It’s never been about public policy or what’s right or what Trump believes. It’s always been about politics.”
“Mr. Trump is panicking. Mr. Biden is concerned that voters will hold him accountable in 2024 because he was the one who overturned Roe,” he said. “Now, Donald, I have news for you. We will. America was built on individual freedom and liberty. Therefore, there is nothing more un-American than having our personal freedoms taken away.” And that’s what Donald Trump did.”
