President Biden said Thursday that former President Trump “deserves to save lives” amid false claims by Trump and his allies about the federal response to recent hurricanes.
“Mr. President Trump, former President Trump, please save lives and help these people,” Biden said in White House remarks about Hurricane Milton.
Asked if he had talked to Trump about spreading misinformation, Biden replied, “Are you kidding me?”
“The people will support it,” the president said. [Trump] He added that the media would be held responsible as well, “because you know the truth.”
When asked if he planned to speak directly to President Trump, he flatly answered “no.”
Biden particularly highlighted Trump's claim that people affected by the storm are receiving only $750 in government aid.
“That $750 they're talking about, Mr. Trump and others know is a lie to suggest that's all they're going to get. That's weird. It's weird.” the president said. “This has to stop. I mean, it's a very un-American way of talking about this.”
Biden calls on Trump and his allies, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), to stop spreading misinformation in the wake of Hurricane Helen and now Milton. I called out. He also gave two speeches from the White House on Wednesday to combat misinformation.
Milton made landfall along the Florida Gulf Coast late Wednesday. A deadly storm surge caused flooding and left millions of Floridians without power.
